Overview

A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic procedure that addresses signs of aging in the face and neck. By tightening underlying muscles and removing excess skin, it reduces sagging, deep creases, and fine lines, creating a more youthful and revitalized appearance. This procedure can also enhance the jawline and restore facial volume, resulting in improved harmony and balance. Facelifts can be customized to meet individual needs, whether a full facelift or a less invasive mini facelift, ensuring natural-looking results that enhance your unique beauty.

Indications for a Facelift:

  • Noticeable sagging skin in the mid-face and neck
  • Deep creases and wrinkles around the nose and mouth
  • Loss of facial volume and contours
  • Jowls or excess skin along the jawline
  • Tired or aged appearance despite good skincare
  • Decreased skin elasticity due to aging
  • Desire for a more youthful and refreshed look

Facelift Options

Primary Facelift

A primary facelift is the most common type of facelift for patients who want to address significant signs of aging. This surgery typically involves lifting and tightening the skin on the face and neck, removing excess skin, and repositioning underlying muscles. The goal is to restore youthful contours and achieve a natural-looking rejuvenation.

Revision Facelift

A revision facelift is tailored for individuals who have previously undergone facelift surgery but are dissatisfied with the results or are experiencing new signs of aging. It focuses on correcting issues like asymmetry, excess skin, or drooping in areas that were previously addressed, thus helping you achieve a more harmonious appearance.

Mini Facelift

A mini facelift, a short scar facelift, is a less invasive option suitable for patients with mild to moderate sagging. It typically targets the lower face and neck, using shorter incisions for quicker recovery and minimal scarring. Ideal for younger patients or those seeking subtle changes, a mini facelift provides a refreshed look without extended downtime.

Lower Facelift

The lower facelift addresses sagging in the jawline and neck areas, making it an excellent option for individuals experiencing jowls or excess skin along the lower face. This procedure focuses on lifting and tightening the skin and underlying muscles, resulting in a more defined jawline and a youthful neck contour for optimal results.

Full/SMAS Facelift

A full or SMAS (superficial muscular aponeurotic system) facelift is a comprehensive procedure that targets deeper layers of facial tissue. It involves lifting both the skin and the SMAS layer to provide more significant results. By addressing sagging and volume loss on the face and neck, a full facelift can dramatically improve facial contours and restore a youthful appearance.

Surgery Details

You will first consult Dr. Elmaraghy to discuss your aesthetic goals and evaluate your facial structure. On the day of the surgery, you will receive either local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the complexity of your procedure. Dr. Elmaraghy will then make carefully planned incisions, which may be placed along the hairline, around the ears, or under the chin to conceal any scarring. These incisions allow access to the underlying tissues.

Once the incisions are made, Dr. Elmaraghy will elevate the skin and tighten the underlying SMAS layer, which provides structural support to the face. He will remove any excess skin and may reposition fat or use grafts to restore lost volume in areas like the cheeks and jawline. After achieving the desired lift and contour, the incisions will be closed using sutures or adhesive strips. The entire procedure typically takes three to five hours.

Recovery & Results

After your facelift procedure, you can expect swelling, bruising, and discomfort for the first few days. Most patients can return to light activities within 1 to 2 weeks, but strenuous exercise should be avoided for at least 4 to 6 weeks. Your sutures will typically be removed within 7 to 10 days. As the swelling subsides over the following months, you’ll begin to see the full results of your facelift. The final results become visible within 6 to 12 months.

Facelift FAQs

How Long Does a Facelift Last?

A facelift typically lasts 10 to 15 years, depending on factors such as your skin type, age, lifestyle, and the extent of the procedure. While it cannot stop the aging process, it significantly enhances your appearance and can improve your self-esteem for many years.

Will I Have Visible Scars After the Surgery?

Dr. Elmaraghy takes great care to place incisions in natural creases and along the hairline, minimizing the visibility of scars. Although some scarring is inevitable, they typically fade over time and can often be concealed with makeup once healed.
